Editorial: Kamala Harris for president

You read these words here in 2020:

Chicago Public Square was conceived as “Chicago’s new front page,” a one-stop briefing for news of importance to the Chicago area.

And front pages—of newspapers, anyway—rarely feature editorials. But sometimes they do. Especially at history’s crucial moments.

This is one of those moments.

And here we are again.

With convicted felon Donald Trump threatening to assume the powers of a dictator—a thing the Supreme Court he transformed has given presidents the power to do—now’s the time for the people of the United States to ensure Trump never again enters the Oval Office.

Make Vice President Kamala Harris the next U.S. president.

But don’t take (just) this editorial’s word for it. Others have said it better:

Scientific American: “For only the second time in our magazine’s 179-year history, the editors … are endorsing a candidate for president. That person is Kamala Harris.”
The Philadelphia Inquirer: “There is only one candidate—Kamala Harris—who will preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States from foreign and domestic enemies. So help us, God.”
The New York Times: “Harris has offered a shared future for all citizens, beyond hate and division.”
The Economist: “A second Trump term comes with unacceptable risks.”
The Atlantic: “Harris doesn’t curry favor with dictators. She won’t abuse the power of the highest office in order to keep it.”
Rolling Stone: “One candidate has spent her career as a dedicated public servant, who believes government exists to serve the people, the other has divided the nation for his own personal gain.”
The Daily Herald: “In building a campaign infrastructure almost from scratch … she has shown the ability … to build a government leadership team capable of effectively managing the serious domestic and foreign matters already confronting the nation.”
The New Yorker: “The United States simply cannot endure another four years of Donald Trump.”
National Security Leaders for America: “Harris defends America’s democratic ideals. … Trump endangers them.”
Former Sun-Times and Tribune editor Mark Jacob: 200 reasons to vote against Trump.
