The jury in Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York has found him guilty on all 34 countsthe first former president to be convicted of a felony.
The judge has set sentencing for July 11—four days before the Republican National Convention.
Trump ranted and lied after the verdict: “Our whole country is being rigged right now.”
Email dispatched by his campaign: “I AM A POLITICAL PRISONER!”
Columnist and former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich observes: “Those jurors were not Democrats. They were not politicians. … Trump’s lawyers allowed them to become jurors because they showed no bias.”
Rachel Maddow on MSNBC: “He’s not running against Joe Biden. He’s running against the American system of government.”
Biden’s campaign was making quick hay of the verdict.
Questions answered: Can Trump still run? Can he vote?
Shares in his Truth Social company took a nosedive (link corrected) in the moments after the verdict.
Message Box columnist Dan Pfeiffer: This is “a massive and unprecedented historical event with the potential to shake up the election. As shocking as that is, that’s not a guarantee.”
Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin: “The only thing that could upend the exquisite implementation of rule of law would be the election of this felon.”
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson: “A shameful day in American history.”
Columnist Jeff Tiedrich: “ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha … (etc.)”
Raygun—maker of Chicago Public Squarewear—was quick to crank out dueling breaking T-shirts:
